EOD - Explosive Ordnance Disposal:

EOD Bomb Tech

The Explosives Unit is a team of highly motivated officers who are specially trained in the recognition, construction, handling and render-safe of improvised explosives and devices. The Unit is comprised of four members, two of whom are FBI Certified Hazardous Devices (Bomb) Technicians, and two which are trained as Para-Technicians.

The Sheriff’s Office Explosives Unit and the Colorado Springs Police Department Explosives Unit work jointly as the Regional Explosives Unit. The Regional Explosives Unit has a response area of the 33 counties that comprise the southern half of the State of Colorado.

In addition to responses to explosive devices, military ordnance and suspicious packages, the Explosives Unit also handles such missions as assists to the Hazardous Materials Team, the SWAT Team, the U.S. Secret Service and any other agency in the region needing technical support. Members of the team also conduct background checks of individuals who have applied for Explosives Permits and provide training for emergency responders.

Bomb Technicians receive their initial certification at the six-week FBI/US Army Hazardous Devices School located at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama.

In 2007, the Explosives Unit received its new 35-foot Emergency Response Truck which was funded by a federal Homeland Security Grant. This same grant also funded the purchase of an Andros F6A Bomb Disposal robot.

After the events of September 11, 2001, the mission and level of training for Bomb Technicians has significantly increased. The members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Explosives Unit have dedicated themselves to meeting this challenge and being prepared to handle any threats to our community.
