Criminal Investigations  

The Major Crimes Unit is responsible for investigating robberies, kidnappings, serious assaults, certain incidents of domestic violence, homicides, cold case homicides, suicides, and other death cases. The General Investigations Unit is responsible for investigating property crimes and sex offenses. Burglaries, motor vehicle theft, check fraud, sexual assaults on both adults and children make up the lion's share of their work load.

During 2006, detectives assumed 695 cases, down from 777 in 2005 and 788 in 2004. Death investigations increased by two to 17. Cases involving crimes against persons remained steady at 143. Sex crime investigation remained increased to 149 cases as compared to 122 the previous year. The number of property crimes investigated dropped to 155 from 185 in 2005.  The number of property crimes investigated remains high as compared to years past (92 in 2003) as detectives continue to take on greater number of property crimes largely as a result of a growing focus on crimes related to Identity Theft.  In 2003, property crimes constituted 13% of our cases as opposed to 22.5% in 2006.
