reserve shoulder patchThe El Paso County Sheriff's Reserve, first organized as the Sheriff's Posse in 1953, provides a ready resource of qualified, trained volunteer manpower to the operations of the Sheriff's Office.

The Reserve Unit is composed of highly trained community minded volunteers that are trained in the Law Enforcement and Detention Operation of the Sheriff’s Office.

The Reserve Deputy: Sworn, uniformed, fully state-certified deputies who are trained to support the operations of the agency's Law Enforcement and Detentions Bureau’s.

Law Enforcement Bureau Support: Reserve deputies with the proper Cointraining certification and direction as required by statute, augment patrol division by working as solo patrol deputies, ride along as partner officers on patrol, conduct traffic enforcement, provide for traffic and crowd control at special events, assist in warrant sweeps, assist in high profile interdiction activities, and provide a ready source of trained manpower for virtually any situation.

Detentions Bureau Support: Reserve deputies with the proper training certification and direction as required by statute and policy augment Detentions Bureau by serving on the wards, Intake and Release, assisting with the road crew support.

CadetsThe Reserves must meet the same criteria for appointment as full-time deputies and must complete the same level of testing and training. Applications are accepted year-round, but applicant processing is coordinated with the full-time hiring processes. Following appointment, Reserves are scheduled to attend a Basic Reserve Law Enforcement Academy as required by POST and, upon completion will be sworn in and placed in the Reserve Certification Program, an "on-the-job" field training program that is modified to accommodate personal work schedules.

Reserves are expected to commit at least 168 hours annually to the operations of the Sheriff'sreserves Office, including attendance at a monthly business and in-service training session, held on the first Wednesday evening of the month. The Sheriff's Office provides handguns and ballistic vests; Reserves must provide complete uniforms. Those reserve that meet the requirements in policy are eligible for an annual uniform allowance after 1 yr of service.
