On Saturday, October 31, 2015, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Deadly Force Investigation Team (DFIT) was notified to respond to the area of Platte Avenue and Wahsatch Avenue, in Colorado Springs, with regard to an officer involved shooting. As part of the Sheriff’s Office ongoing investigation the following information has been obtained:
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has received credible information that Maxwell Garihan may have hitchhiked from Greeley, Colorado to the north end of El Paso County on October 15, 2015. Garihan is accused of killing Alan Havens and shooting Margaret Temple in the late evening hours of October 15 or the early hours of October 16, 2015. He was known to hitchhike regularly in the Greeley area and did not have a vehicle.
On October 31, 2015, at 8:45 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a call for service regarding shots fired in the 200 block of North Prospect Street. Officers received a description of the suspect and his direction of travel. Officers encountered the suspect at Platte Avenue and Wahsatch Street. The suspect fired multiple shots at the officers. CSPD officers returned fire and the suspect was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
On October 31, 2015, at 8:45 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a call for service regarding shots fired in the 200 block of North Prospect Street. Officers received a description of the suspect and their direction of travel. Officers encountered the suspect at Platte Avenue and Wasatch Street. The suspect fired multiple shots at the officers. CSPD officers returned fire.
On or between 9/20/2015 and 10/23/2015, an unknown suspect(s) fired a single high powered rifle round at Turbine #35 in the Golden West Wind Energy Center in Calhan, Colorado. Turbine #35 is located near the intersection of North Yoder Road and Heaston Road. The damage to the turbine is estimated between $20,000 and $250,000 depending on the severity of damage.
The Meridian Ranch and Woodmen Hills areas experienced a large rash of vehicle break-ins on Monday night, October 12, 2015, into Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Vehicles were entered and garage door openers, vehicle registrations, and several firearms were stolen. A silver Honda Odyssey van was also stolen and has not been located thus far.
At approximately 12:06 AM, October 16, 2015, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call reference shooting. When deputies got on scene, they found a female who had a gunshot wound to the head. They also found a deceased male with a gunshot wound to the head. The dog was also shot.
The Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the El Paso County Department of Human Services (DHS) to address the physical and mental health concerns of individuals released from jail in El Paso County. The Board of County Commissioners will read a resolution of this partnership at their meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 9:00 AM.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Springs Police Department are working on adopting Body Worn Cameras for our agencies. As we move forward, we feel it is important to get input from the communities in which we serve on how, when and where cameras should be used.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Laynee Madison Blair, DOB 3-17-93. Laynee has been missing since September 16, 2015, at 4:30 pm when she left her Ute Pass home in a blue 2004 Honda Civic with Colorado License plate 481QRW. Laynee has not been seen or heard from since.
On the evening of Monday, September 7, 2015, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Woodmoor Conoco located at 1949 Woodmoor Drive in regards to a robbery. The Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate and speak with Ashley Keith DOB: 08-10-80, who was the clerk on duty the night of the robbery.
The Sheriff's Office put out a Media Release yesterday regarding a crime spree which took place from the Monument to Cimarron Hills Area on Sunday, September 13 and Monday, September 14, 2015.
Community tips have allowed us to confirm the identity of one of the suspects, Nicole Laree Kirk, DOB: 3/13/96. Nicole is 5'04" and weighs approximately 120lbs. She has brown hair and green eyes.
On September 15, 2015, at 4:20 PM, the Sheriff's Office Crime Reduction Unit and SWAT received a request from a Department of Corrections Parole Officer for assistance with an Attempt To Locate on Jashua Nathan Kresky, DOB 09/03/87. Jashua had recently been released from prison and was currently wanted on several parole violations. In addition, he is a person of interest in several motor vehicle thefts, second degree burglaries and auto break-ins occurring in both the City and County.
At approximately 10:55 PM, on Monday, September 14, 2015, the Sheriff's Office received a call from a victim in the Monument area stating someone had broken into their vehicle. The suspects fled in a dark colored vehicle. At approximately 11:10 PM, the suspects entered a detached garage in the Black Forest area, but nothing was believed stolen.
On Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at approximately 1:30 PM, the Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call to assist in a search for a missing 71 year old female in the Black Forest Area.
On September 8, 2015, the Sheriff's Office responded to a call of Check the Welfare. The reporting party stated she was very concerned about her daughter and grandson.
On September 7, 2015, at approximately 9:00 PM hours, Deputies were dispatched to the Conoco Gas Station, located at 1949 Woodmoor Drive, in reference to a Robbery. Units from Monument Police and Palmer Lake Police also responded.
On August 26, 2015, an El Paso County resident realized their credit card was being used after checking their bank statement. It was learned the card was fraudulently used by a lone unknown female at the Target Store located at 3810 Bloomington Street on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at approximately 3:55 PM.
The suspect purchased two iPads totaling $1,181.72, and attempted two more transactions with the stolen card, but those were declined.
The Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received an anonymous tip at approximately 12:21 AM, this morning stating the Mr. Garnier was seen at the Howard Johnson on South Nevada Avenue. Deputies arrived on scene and made contact with Mr. Garnier, but he was unwilling to exit the motel. After several attempts to get him to come out, the Sheriff's Office called and requested K-9 assistance from the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The Sheriff's Office is actively looking for Phillip Patrick Garnier, DOB: 10/04/91. He is wanted on two Felony Warrants; Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and Failure to Comply with Probation. Mr. Garnier plead guilty to Sexual Assault on a Child by a Person in a Position of Trust in 2014.
On Friday, August 21, 2015, at approximately 6:00 AM, Micaela Worchester was last seen at the 1400 block of Delwood Drive, when she left for school. Micaela did not return home on Friday night. She was supposed to go to work on Friday afternoon in the area of Woodmen Road and Powers Blvd. Micaela did not show up for her shift. Micaela takes several different medications and does not have her medication with her.
Effective September 1, 2015, the Sheriff's Office will no longer take walk-ins for those registering as a Sex Offender, but will be scheduling appointments. Appointments can be made by calling 719-520-7333 or emailing Dawn Pearson at email@example.com. Once an appointment is set, reminder calls will not be made.
On August 16, 2015, at approximately 8:45 P.M., Adonnis Lopez DOB: 01/04/00 (15yrs) left his foster care residence located on Fielding Terrace. His current location is unknown but he is known to frequent the area of Fountain Boulevard and Hancock Expressway near the Hillside Community Center. He may also be hanging around the Downtown Colorado Springs area.
On August 5, 2015, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office began a missing person investigation regarding the disappearance of 34 year old Justin Ryan Cooney. Justin is 5’10” tall and weighs approximately 150 lbs. Justin was last heard from by his employer on July 7, 2015. Justin is thought to be driving a 2006, silver Nissan Frontier pick-up with Colorado license plate 880NWD.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2015, around 10:30 AM, Alyxander Stephen Yawn DOB: 2/8/97, was at the Presbyterian Saint Luke Hospital in Denver with a Department of Youth Corrections Officer. While in the examination room his restraints (handcuffs, leg restraints) were removed at the request of the Doctor. He then went into the restroom. After approximately 60 seconds, the Corrections Officer went to check on him and he was gone. He had fled through the adjoining door which was unsecure.
On July 29, 2015, Christpher James Rader, DOB: 7/20/91, was arrested by the Sheriff's Office Crime Reduction Unit on an outstanding arrest warrant for Sexual Assault on a Child and Secual Assault on a Child by on in a Position of Trust.
Based on statements may by Mr. Rader we are concerned there may be additional victims. He is known to frequent the area around 2701 Robinson Street, and information indicates that be may have babysat children in that area.
On Friday, July 31, 2015, a joint operation was executed for the apprehension of Colorado Bureau of Investigations (CBI) #55, Most Wanted Sex Offender identified as Toby Mohr, DOB: 08-15-75. This joint operation included the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division.
On July 14, 2015, the Sheriff's Office put out a Media Release notifying the public we were looking for a missing juvenile by the name of Sabrena Waite. She was found within 24 hours of posting her information on social media.
The adult male has been identified as Carlos Alberto Mendoza, DOB 7/15/1979, through fingerprints. Mr. Mendoza has a number of alias’ to include the name provided by family of Manuel Martinez Mejia, DOB 7/10/82. The cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results and will be released by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
