The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is committed to recruiting, hiring and retaining the most qualified and professional personnel. The Sheriff's Office is an equal opportunity employer and actively recruits individuals for the position of deputy sheriff. There are excellent advancement and promotional incentives, as well as monetary rewards for superior service. Additionally, the Office will ensure that sworn positions at each rank receive an equal base salary regardless of the employee's assignment.

NOTE: If you are hired by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO), as an El Paso County Deputy Sheriff you will be required to sign a 2-year training agreement. This agreement states you will remain employed with the EPSO (barring termination) for at least two years or you will be assessed monetary charges, associated with training, based on a sliding scale depending on your length of stay.
Qualifications and Testing Procedure
QUALIFICATIONS
The following are the minimum qualifications for the position of deputy sheriff:
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must possess a Colorado Driver's License.
- Must be financially responsible.
- Must be in good health.
- Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20.
- Weight must be in proportion to height.
Applicants will not be considered if they have been convicted of a felony, certain misdemeanors, domestic violence or a crime of moral turpitude.
Applicants may not be considered for employment if they have ever sold or used illegal drugs. Any illegal usage of marijuana within the past 12 months and/or other illegal drug usage within the last five (5) years, may exclude the candidate from the hiring process.
TESTING PROCEDURE
The following is the testing cycle for all deputy sheriff applicants:
- Written Examination
- Oral Interview/Assessment Center
- Truth Verification Examination
- Psychological Examination.

B. Criminal record check
C. Traffic record check
D. Credit check
E. Application information verification
- Physical Examination and physical assessment testing
- Drug Screening
Failure to satisfactorily complete any testing phase will result in elimination from further consideration.
Salary and benefits
SALARY- The El Paso County Sheriff's Office places a strong emphasis on ensuring that all of its personnel are provided with competitive compensation, benefits and retirement. The following salaries are currently effective for each designation:

BENEFITS
HEALTH INSURANCE
El Paso County offers health insurance through PacifiCare. The County and the employee share the cost of the family health insurance. The County pays the employee's premium of the low option health insurance plan.
LIFE INSURANCE
The County pays a basic premium for the employee and their dependents. Additional coverage is optional.
WORKER'S COMPENSATION - SELF INSURED
All employees are entitled to worker's compensation administered through the County. This coverage provides protection for an employee absent from work due to a job-related injury or illness. There is no cost to the employee for this protection.
RETIREMENT PLAN
All full-time employees are required to participate in the El Paso County Retirement Plan. The cost of the plan is 6% of the employee's gross monthly salary on a pre-tax basis. The employee becomes vested after five years and the County will match their contributions upon retirement. This plan is in addition to Social Security benefits.
ON THE JOB TRAINING - VA BENEFITS
All deputy sheriffs participate in on- the-job training for the first two (2) years of employment. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office OJT Program is recognized by the Veteran's Administration for payment of educational benefits to qualified veterans.
SHORT-TERM DISABILITY
All employees are required to contribute $5.00 per check toward STD coverage. Refer to the County website for more information.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY
Following a 180 day period of total disability, El Paso County will pay 60% of the employee's monthly earnings up to a maximum monthly benefit of $2,500.00. There are no premiums paid by the employee for this benefit.
